How to Check and Change Your Car’s Oil
Regular oil changes are one of the most important tasks for maintaining your car's engine. Oil lubricates the engine, reduces friction, and helps cool the moving parts. Over time, oil breaks down and becomes less effective, so checking and changing it regularly is essential for keeping your car running smoothly. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to check and change your car’s oil.
How to Check Your Car’s Oil
1. Gather Necessary Tools
Before checking your car’s oil, make sure you have the following items:
- A clean rag or paper towels
- The car owner’s manual (for oil type and capacity reference)
2. Park on a Level Surface
For an accurate reading, park your car on a flat, level surface. This ensures that the oil settles in the oil pan.
3. Turn Off the Engine and Wait
If the engine has been running, turn off the car and wait for about 5–10 minutes. This allows the oil to settle in the oil pan and gives a more accurate reading.
4. Locate the Dipstick
Open the hood of your car and locate the dipstick. The dipstick is usually a brightly colored handle (often yellow or orange) and is located near the engine.
5. Remove the Dipstick
Pull the dipstick out of its tube and wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel.
