1. Resource Extraction and Raw Materials

The environmental impact of car manufacturing begins with the extraction of raw materials needed to produce the various components of a vehicle. These materials include metals, plastics, rubber, and chemicals, many of which require significant energy and water to extract, process, and transport.

  • Mining and Resource Extraction: Key materials like steel, aluminum, copper, nickel, and lithium are required for various parts of the vehicle, including the body, engine, and battery. Mining these materials can have significant environmental consequences, such as habitat destruction, water pollution, and soil degradation.
  • Battery Materials: Electric vehicles (EVs) require large amounts of lithium, cobalt, and nickel for their batteries.
